From the Roosevelt to Sweethearts - the Cross from its peak to its fall.’
The story of the Cross from its finest days to its lowest is bookended by two businesses - the Roosevelt in Orwell Street and Sweethearts, the seedy cafe where McDonalds now stands.
The Roosevelt was the epitome of chic Sydney - grand shows, superb food and drinks deep into the night. The latter gave the law good bend, but who cared? it was home to the political, legal and social glitterati and catalyst in stirring the Cross to greatness in post WW2 Sydney. What followed was entertainment venues with greats like Sinatra, nightclubs, the home of rock and roll, the art of striptease and restaurants that were the foundation of today’s brilliant food scene.
But the good times didn’t last forever and by the 1980s the glamour of the Cross was deeply tarnished and places like Sweethearts had become a home for bent cops, crooks, ne’er do wells plotting over lousy coffee.
Join Brandy and Duncan on tour of the Cross during the most intriguing times of its long and gripping history.
