'Outlaw Bikers of the Cross' with Duncan McNab - 25 August

Father’s Day 1984 - a clash between outlaw motorcycle gangs the Bandidos & Comancheros left seven people (including an innocent bystander) dead in the carpark of the Viking Tavern in Milperra.

Forty years later, the gangs are still on the front page with the alleged involvement in unions and government contracts. Milperra changed the face of crime in Australia, with the outlaw bikers prospering and becoming the largest organised crime challenge in Australia.  The Bandidos (motto: we are the people our parents warned us about) were the first major presence in the Cross, followed by Comancheros, Nomads and Hells Angels. A local gang - Notorious or the Nike Bikies - were around briefly before sliding into history.

The Cross was largely neutral ground for the outlaws - no one wanted a repeat of the Milperra Massacre.

Join Brandon and Duncan for a chat about the outlaw bikers of the Cross - a place where they plotted, played and glared at rivals over a schooner rather than at the business end of a sawn-off.  This chat is a week before the 40th anniversary of the blood-soaked Milperra Massacre - the deadly battle that put Australian crime on the world map, and changed our underworld forever.

Tickets are $25 and include a cocktail on arrival.

'Juanita Nielsen, Sallie-Anne Huckstepp & Lynn Woodward' with Duncan McNab - 21 July

Each year we talk about Juanita Nielsen who took on the daunting collection of property developers and their political, business and police cronies, to save Victoria Street.

Juanita disappeared on the morning of the 4th of July 1975. She was last seen at the Carousel Club, where she had gone to discuss the club advertising in her newspaper NOW. What followed was an investigation hampered by red herrings, political and business intrigues, whiffs of corruption and plenty of theories. In 2021, the ABC aired their ill-fated documentary and podcast series.

In the wake of Juanita’s 1975 disappearance/murder two other brave women - Sallie Anne Huckstepp and Lynne Woodward - took on the most corrupt and deadly coppers in living memory and paid the highest price for that bravery.

Sallie Anne was murdered in Centennial Park and Lyn disappeared (believed murdered) after giving the first instalment of her evidence at the NSW Coroner’s Court in the Lanfranchi Inquest.

One of the prime suspects in both cases was Roger Rogerson.

Join Brandon and Duncan to talk about the these brave women whose work and sacrifice lifted the lid on corruption in the Cross and NSW.

Tickets are $25 and include a cocktail on arrival.

'Rise & Fall of Kings Cross' with Duncan McNab - 30th June

Every great city has a place where heaven and hell collide; where the dark and light run in parallel but occasionally intersect, providing refuge for all manner of social outcasts and sexual outlaws; a place where the party stops only for a fast freshen up then back into it.

For Australia, that place was Kings Cross - a drawcard for anyone wanting a walk on the wildest of sides, if only briefly.

Fortunes were made in Kings Cross by giving the public what they wanted - but in the wake of the Wood Royal Commission into the NSW Police and the rise of belligerent crime gangs viewing the Cross as gold mine, the lustre was fading fast. The streets, once rowdy but relatively safe, were taking on a dangerous edge thanks to party crowds full of booze and drugs. In 2012, Thomas Kelly was attacked in the Cross, and in 2014, just metres from where Thomas fell, Daniel Christie was attacked. Both were 18years old and died as a result of these violent, unprovoked, random attacks.

The response by the NSW Government was the lock-out laws. The Cross’s globally famous nightlife came to swift end. But the Cross has always been about change and is slowly rebounding after the lifting of the lockout laws and the pandemic.

Join Brandon and Duncan about the lead up to these two terrible crimes, the impact, the key players and the recovery and future of Kings Cross.

Tickets are $25 and include a cocktail on arrival.

'Sharing and Caring' with Duncan McNab - 5 May

In 1998, aspiring King of the Cross Danny Karam was gunned down by his protégé Michael Kanaan & the young men he recruited to be a part of DK’s Boys, a drug gang focused in Kings Cross. In the lead up to the execution, Kanaan and some his crew had been on a rampage around Sydney - a double, murder, assaults, and shooting up a police station in a drive by.

Danny’s demise was because he didn’t share nicely with his crew of cocaine dealers, so DK’s Boys killed Danny in a hail of bullets and Michael Kanaan took over.

But that didn’t last long. Michael and team, while en-route to allegedly bump off John Ibrahim’s bodyguard Tongan Sam, were pulled over by a two suspicious young police officers. A gunfight ensued in the quiet backstreets of Paddington. The brave coppers were wounded, but survived. Michael was shot in the bum while trying to flee and then shot himself in foot. He and his homicidal team are in prison for a very long time.

Join Brandon and Duncan as they tell a story about not sharing, not caring, gangs and guns.

Tickets are $25 and include a cocktail on arrival.

'The Snapshot Killer' with Duncan McNab - 17th March

Christopher Wilder, born in Sydney but living in Florida, was arrested just after Christmas 1982 at the then glamorous Top Of The Town hotel in the Cross. He was charged for abducting and sexually assaulting two teenage girls, with his crimes against them spanning from Manly Beach to his Kings Cross hotel room. These two girls weren’t the first victims and many would follow.

The hotel was Wilder’s preferred home base on his trips back to Australia to visit his parents. The hotel’s elegant Four Stars restaurant and International bar with spectacular city view were places the Porsche driving playboy wanted to be seen in, and the Cross by night offered the seedy charms he relished. By day, Wilder stalked teenage girls on Sydney beachfronts, posing as a photographer and offering the prospect of a modelling career. But what the arresting police didn’t know - thanks to a major bungle - waa Wilder was a strong suspect for the terrible Wanda Beach Murders back in 1965 - still unsolved.

Wilder was given bail and due to return to Sydney for face court in April 1984, but didn’t make it. At the end of February that year, with a prison sentence looming and rapidly deteriorating mental health, Wilder went on a homicidal rampage from Miami to Los Angeles then to a remote corner of NE USA where he died in a skirmish with police. On that appalling trip he abducted, sexually assaulted, tortured and murdered. The FBI had him at number one on the Ten Most Wanted - ‘wherever he went someone died’ said the agent in charge.Sadly, with Wilder’s long history, he could have been stopped, but wasn’t.

Forty years later, other probable Wilder victims are being identified. Duncan wrote a book about Wilder back in 2019 and Wilder is the subject of a US documentary soon to be released.

Join Brandon and Duncan in a story about a man once described as the worst serial killer in modern history
