In 1998, aspiring King of the Cross Danny Karam was gunned down by his protégé Michael Kanaan & the young men he recruited to be a part of DK’s Boys, a drug gang focused in Kings Cross. In the lead up to the execution, Kanaan and some his crew had been on a rampage around Sydney - a double, murder, assaults, and shooting up a police station in a drive by.

Danny’s demise was because he didn’t share nicely with his crew of cocaine dealers, so DK’s Boys killed Danny in a hail of bullets and Michael Kanaan took over.

But that didn’t last long. Michael and team, while en-route to allegedly bump off John Ibrahim’s bodyguard Tongan Sam, were pulled over by a two suspicious young police officers. A gunfight ensued in the quiet backstreets of Paddington. The brave coppers were wounded, but survived. Michael was shot in the bum while trying to flee and then shot himself in foot. He and his homicidal team are in prison for a very long time.

Christopher Wilder, born in Sydney but living in Florida, was arrested just after Christmas 1982 at the then glamorous Top Of The Town hotel in the Cross. He was charged for abducting and sexually assaulting two teenage girls, with his crimes against them spanning from Manly Beach to his Kings Cross hotel room. These two girls weren’t the first victims and many would follow.

The hotel was Wilder’s preferred home base on his trips back to Australia to visit his parents. The hotel’s elegant Four Stars restaurant and International bar with spectacular city view were places the Porsche driving playboy wanted to be seen in, and the Cross by night offered the seedy charms he relished. By day, Wilder stalked teenage girls on Sydney beachfronts, posing as a photographer and offering the prospect of a modelling career. But what the arresting police didn’t know - thanks to a major bungle - waa Wilder was a strong suspect for the terrible Wanda Beach Murders back in 1965 - still unsolved.

Wilder was given bail and due to return to Sydney for face court in April 1984, but didn’t make it. At the end of February that year, with a prison sentence looming and rapidly deteriorating mental health, Wilder went on a homicidal rampage from Miami to Los Angeles then to a remote corner of NE USA where he died in a skirmish with police. On that appalling trip he abducted, sexually assaulted, tortured and murdered. The FBI had him at number one on the Ten Most Wanted - ‘wherever he went someone died’ said the agent in charge.Sadly, with Wilder’s long history, he could have been stopped, but wasn’t.

Forty years later, other probable Wilder victims are being identified. Duncan wrote a book about Wilder back in 2019 and Wilder is the subject of a US documentary soon to be released.

The NSW Special Commission into LGBTIQ hate crimes is a world first and its report was released just days before Christmas 2023.  It was appropriately critical of NSW Police and contains 19 recommendations which should have a massive impact on the handling of cold case murders in NSW. But in the background is another cold case murder, and one that was initially bungled (like so many) but later prompted competent police to think they may have an epidemic of gay hate crimes on their hands.

That case is the 1990 murder of Ludwig Gertsch, a hairdresser, retired go go boy and heir to a chunk of the estate of his late lover Roger Claude Teyssedre who, with Dawn O’Donnell, built an empire of gay bars, hotels, sex on premises venues, etc. along the streets of Sydney throughout the 1970s and 1980’s.The mysterious circumstances surrounding Roger’s death and Ludwig’s murder months later, raise unsettling questions, creating a web of intrigue and suspicion. Ludwig’s death  was originally thought to have been a hate crime a but turned out to be more traditional - murder possibly for love, lust and lucre. No one has been arrested and it remains a cold case.

At 11:45am on 31 March 1989, history was made at the Kings Cross Police Station when a team of 40 detectives swept in, closed the station, searched it from top to bottom, and carted off a few detectives for questioning on allegations of massive corruption involving drug dealing and two of the nation’s most notorious pedophiles Robert ‘Dolly’ Dunn and Colin Fisk.

In the corrupt underbelly of Kings Cross, Detective Sergeant Larry Churchill, once described by colleagues as ‘into everything bar a shit sandwich and that’s only because he doesn’t like bread’, reigns supreme. Known for his involvement in everything shady, he's the ring leader of a group of bent cops. Glen McNamara, now serving life alongside Roger Rogerson for the murder of Jamie Gao, reveals the shocking reality of their so-called 'duty hours' in the early 1989 Cross, where crime thrived and wonder became wicked.

Long lunches were often business meetings with Fisk and Dunn. Churchill, in return for ignoring their vile behaviour, put their chemistry skills to work making amphetamines which were distributed by a young drug dealer he’d also coerced. The tip off on their nefarious activities  came from McNamara - he’d later pitch it as a white knight moment, but the reality was he thought he’d been caught out on surveillance, and in an audio tape, and was trying to save his hide.
