It was the early 1980s and Sydney was awash with conspiracies many of which had one common element - Kings Cross.

Victorian QC Frank Costigan’s inquiry into the state’s nefarious Painters & Dockers Union had slipped across the Murray in what must have been a leaky boat because Sydney papers were agog with Costigan’s belief that a shadowy figure called The Goanna was the nation’s criminal mastermind. In an each way bet he had a similar view of a man called Gomorrah. The Goanna outed himself - Kerry Packer. Gomorrah was Abe Saffron. But in the grand tradition, there was more!

Conspiracy theories swept the city - Premier ‘Nifty’ Nev Wran was in cahoots with Abe and other allegedly nefarious characters ; the tragedy of Luna Park was not an accident but an arson as part of an evil corporate ploy; nightclubs and brothels were catching fire; members of the judiciary even High Court Judge Lionel Murphy, were bent; and on the streets of the Cross - the engine room of crime - the Bourbon was home to shadowy links to the CIA and a shonky bank; the inquest into the disappearance of Juanita Neilsen was on everyone’s lips, and hitman Chris ‘Rent A Kill’ Flannery, an habitué of the Cross, had disappeared in the middle of a gang war - was he in Brazil or at the bottom of Botany Bay?

Join Duncan and Brandy on a trip back to the Cross at its most turbulent - where gossip and conspiracy theories trumped over the facts.
