As Polly Petrie hung out the window of Capricio’s, June 24th of 1978 mid show; she witnessed the beginning of a revolution. A protest that marched down Oxford street towards the city in defiance of the status quo and demanding attention.
“Out of the bars and into the streets” became the war cry and by the time Polly found herself all dolled-up on a truck, celebrating the anniversary of that first protest things were starting to change, but it was still hard work. Years have progressed and Mardi Gras has evolved and grown with its community. No one would have guessed that watching a protest in 78 would lead to gracing the front page of American newspapers and being part of the team bringing World Pride to Sydney.
We chat with Polly Petrie about the what it meant to join a resistance and fight for pride, acceptance and celebration. In what promises to be an eye opening interview with Brandon, Polly will share stories of the gay rights movement in Australia and how Sydney carved out a name for itself as one of the world’s gayest cities.
