Former detective Duncan McNab is live and talking all things Sydney Gay Hate Crimes from 6pm.
In May 1984, homosexual sex was finally decriminalised. Gay men no longer faced the threat of years behind bars for simply living their lives. But in the background were two dreadful slices of our recent history - the AIDS pandemic was ripping through the gay community and in the streets, parks and other places where gay men met, youths and youth gangs (and allegedly in some instances, police officers) were committing cowardly, vicious and brazen attacks. Some were deadly. Some murders were investigated competently, others a once over lightly and some, like the case of Scott Johnson, passed off as suicide - yet another cruel blow to already grieving family & friends. Some crimes went unreported with victims fearing backlash from police, family and employers. These are the darkest moments in Sydney’s recent history. The scope of these terrible crimes wasn’t known until the early 2000s thanks to the tireless work our victim’’s mother, a dedicated detective and a Coroner. Nearly twenty years later, in November 2021, the government announced an inquiry into these crimes - details have yet to be released.
Join Brandy and Duncan in conversation about the times, the crimes, the people, the successes and the failures that prompted these crimes, their impact and why so many go unresolved and punished, Many of the perpetrators are now middle-aged and have evaded justice - It’s time that ended.
