SEX! SEX! SEX!

Now we have your attention, Sex and Kings Cross have been entwined for generations.

Sydney has always been varying degrees of ‘sexy’. From the ‘floating brothel’ to the world’s largest bed at The Nevada. The often rough trade ramped up with sailors from the nearby docks swarming into East Sydney - money to spend for good times promised by brothel keepers like Sydney’s original Mrs Sins; Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh. With World War 2 and later Vietnam; the sex trade blew up the hill from east Sydney and into the streets, backrooms and brothels of Kings Cross. The likes of which were owned by Joe Borg and his ilk. On Darlinghurst Road the burlesque and strip tease were added to by Madam Lash dispensing both pain and pleasure, and in 1973; Australia’s first sex shop.

However behind the glitz, glamour and good times, the Kings Cross sex trade became ground zero for a looming heroin plague. Which in the early 1980s, heavy with the despair of drug addiction brought about the exploitation of teens in places like Fitzroy Gardens and The Wall. The desperation welcomed corruption, and even once Golden Apple’s turned poisonous.

Join Brandon and Duncan for a chat about Sydney and Kings Cross in an era that lead to the Wood’s Commision. It was a time when the Cross really leant into its sleaze, and the wheels were starting to come off the cart.
