OVER-SEXED, OVER-PAID AND OVER HERE - US servicemen who changed the Cross.
From December 1941 to the end of the war in 1945, around 1 million US servicemen, of which 100K were African American, came to Australia, mostly for respite from the war. For those in Sydney, Kings Cross was the mecca, offering booze all through the night, fine company and nightlife. With the flourishing businesses came flourishing crime - sly grog, the blackmarket fed by thieves and the nearby docklands, prostitution, gambling and abortion. You could anything you wanted in The Cross if you had cash. The place changed forever.
When the Americans returned in 1967 this time respite from Vietnam. Their first stop was visitors headquarters at the Chevron - aided by volunteers from the Country Women’s Association. The night clubs and strip joints, now part of the Cross, thrived. But what the troops brought that left the most dramatic change to the place was heroin.
Join Brandy and Duncan for a chat about the extraordinary impact US servicemen had on the Cross - these were the wildest times in the long and always intriguing of the place described by a 1969 article in the US Women’s Wear Daily as ‘layer upon layer of humanity living, loving and suffering exult in a great glittering ant-heap of architectural wonders and haunting history.'
