Former detective Duncan McNab is live and talking “Heroes Of The Cross”… from 6pm.
Kenneth Slessor, the great journalist and poet who lived his life in the Cross wrote in the 1960s, that his home was:
'a term rather than a place. Its boundaries are flexible’ and people who call it the Cross 'are expressing a state of mind, just as the Cross itself is perpetually expressing a state of mind.’ It's a place that has 'managed to cling defiantly to the tatters of its unconformity ‘
Slessors comment is as relevant now as it was then. Among that a magnificent band of non-conformists was people including Dulcie Deamer (the Queen of Bohemia, writer and muse to Norman Lindsay) and Rosaleen Norton (“the Witch of the Cross’ who made her living as an artist supplemented by the occasional hex and spell).
Rosaleen, in the deeply conservative 50s, managed to deeply offend the Vice Squad with her approach to sex and fun. Then there were the artists at the Yellow House including Brett Whiteley, John Olsen and Robert Klippel and in the middle of the half mile, William Dobell. Some of the band were there for a relatively short time but left a massive impression, like Jack Mundey, who, as leader of the Builder's Labourers Federation, was one of the key reasons Victoria Street was saved from the barbarian property developers. Campaigning alongside Jack and union was Juanita Nielsen.
Join Brandy and Duncan for night that celebrates some of the heroes and characters that made the Cross the unique and extraordinary place it is.
