Around 1am on 27 January 1986 Megan Kalajzich, wife of multimillionaire hotelier Andrew, was shot to death while she lay beside him.
The murder was plotted over a fisherman’s basket in the restaurant at the Rex and more than a few cleansing ales in the Bottoms Up bar.
The hitman was mild mannered Bill Vandenberg who managed the restaurant. As the plot developed and his reluctance grew, he was shot at in the carpark of his Elizabeth Bay unit block - probably the first gunfire in a Harry Seidler building. In a turbulent investigation, Andrew was arrested, released, then, after confessions from the conspirators, re-arrested and convicted of plotting Megan’s execution.. Along the way, there were dodgy charges against colourful Sydney identities for conspiring to kill Vandenberg in prison, Vandenberg’s suicide and then a dramatic confession.
Join Brandon and Duncan to talk about one of the most high profile and bizarre murder cases in Australian history and a plot born in Kings Cross.
